Rats around GTA homes

Rats around Greater Toronto Area homes are larger than mice, with droppings about 1 to 2 cm long and burrows along foundations, decks and sheds. They chew wood, plastic and wiring to reach food and shelter. Activity is often outdoors first, then in garages, basements and wall voids.

How to recognize it

  • A larger rodent than a mouse, with a blunt snout and a thick tail
  • Droppings about 1 to 2 cm long, often in garages, sheds or along the foundation
  • Burrow holes in soil beside the foundation, deck, shed or compost
  • Gnawed door bottoms, bins and stored goods

What damage it causes

  • Chewed door seals, plastic bins and soft building materials
  • Damaged wiring and insulation once they are inside a wall
  • Contaminated stored food and pet food
  • Undermined soil along foundations and walkways from burrows

Where it lives

  • Burrows in soil along the foundation, under decks and beside sheds
  • Garages, basements and crawl spaces, then wall voids if a gap is large enough
  • Yards with clutter, woodpiles, bird feeders or open compost
  • Older neighbourhoods and homes backing onto ravines in Toronto, Brampton and the rest of the GTA

Questions about rats

Do rats live in the walls?

They often start in a burrow outside. Once they find a gap into the garage or basement, they travel inside walls the same way mice do. The burrow outside is usually still there.

Why are there more rats in Toronto?

City of Toronto rodent service requests rose from 1,165 in 2015 to 2,523 in 2024. Warmer winters, more people and construction that moves colonies all play a part.

Common in these cities

Often confused with house mice.
