House mice in GTA homes

A house mouse is a small rodent with a pointed snout, large ears and droppings about the size of a grain of rice. In Greater Toronto Area homes they nest in wall voids, attics and behind appliances. They chew food packaging, insulation and wiring, and they fit through a gap about the width of a pencil.

How to recognize it

  • Small, grey-brown body, pointed snout, large ears and a long thin tail
  • Droppings the size of a grain of rice, pointed at the ends, along baseboards and in cupboards
  • Scratching in walls or ceilings at night
  • A stale, musky smell in closed cupboards or the attic

What damage it causes

  • Chewed boxes, bread bags and stored food in the pantry
  • Gnawed electrical wiring, which is a fire risk
  • Torn insulation in attics and wall voids
  • Greasy rub marks along the paths they travel every night

Where it lives

  • Wall voids, attics and the space behind stoves and fridges
  • Basements and garages, especially once nights cool in fall
  • Gaps around pipes, vents and garage doors — a pencil-width opening is enough
  • Detached homes, townhouses and condos across Brampton, Mississauga and Toronto

Questions about house mice

How can I tell mouse droppings from rat droppings?

Mouse droppings are small, about the size of a grain of rice, and pointed. Rat droppings are larger, about 1 to 2 cm. A technician confirms which rodent it is at the inspection.

Where do mice nest in a house?

Usually somewhere warm and close to food: inside a wall, in the attic, or behind an appliance. Outdoor nesting in clutter or sheds is common before they move indoors in fall.
