Wasps and hornets around GTA homes

Wasps and hornets build paper nests that grow fastest in late summer, when the colony is largest. On Greater Toronto Area houses the usual spots are under eaves, behind soffits, in sheds and inside wall voids. A nest by a door or play area is a sting risk. A nest inside a wall can chew through drywall.

How to recognize it

  • Wasps flying in and out of one opening under an eave, deck, soffit or shed
  • A grey paper nest hanging in a tree, bush or porch, or hidden behind a vent
  • Wasps indoors from a light, window or crack, with no food source nearby
  • Scratching or chewing inside a wall in late summer

What damage it causes

  • Stings, especially when a nest is beside a door, deck or play area
  • Chewed drywall or insulation when the nest is inside a wall void
  • A colony that keeps using the same entrance until it is closed
  • Old nests are not reused, but a new queen may build beside last year’s spot

Where it lives

  • Under eaves, behind soffits and in attic vents
  • The underside of decks, shed rafters and play structures
  • Wall voids, entered through a gap in siding
  • Yards across Brampton, Mississauga, Toronto and the rest of the GTA from late spring through fall

Questions about wasps and hornets

Do wasps reuse the same nest next year?

No. The colony dies in fall and the nest is abandoned. A new queen may start a nest nearby the following spring, often at the same gap in the soffit or siding.

Where do wasps nest on a house?

Anywhere sheltered: under the eave, inside a soffit, under a deck, or in a wall void behind a crack in the siding. The entrance is often a small hole with steady traffic in and out.
