House spiders in GTA homes

House spiders in the Greater Toronto Area build webs in quiet corners: basements, window wells, garages and ceiling edges. They do not damage wood or wiring. A sudden number of spiders usually means the basement has the insects they eat, often alongside damp conditions that also suit silverfish and centipedes.

How to recognize it

  • Webs in ceiling corners, window frames, basements and garages
  • Spiders that stay on the web rather than running across the floor at night
  • Egg sacs in undisturbed corners
  • More webs after other small insects have been active in the same room

What damage it causes

  • Webs and egg sacs on ceilings, windows and stored goods
  • No chewing of framing, wiring or fabric the way rodents or carpet beetles do
  • A sign that other insects are available as food
  • Occasional bites if a spider is trapped against skin. Most house spiders avoid people

Where it lives

  • Basement corners, window wells and the top of foundation walls
  • Garages, sheds and the gap behind stored boxes
  • Ceiling edges and light fixtures in rooms that are rarely disturbed
  • Drier upper floors less often than damp lower levels, across GTA houses

Questions about house spiders

Do house spiders mean the house has a bigger problem?

Often, yes. Spiders stay where there is food. A basement full of webs usually also has the smaller insects those spiders are catching, and often a moisture issue.

Where do spiders hide in a house?

Quiet, undisturbed corners: the basement, window wells, the garage, and the edge where the ceiling meets the wall. They are less common in busy, bright kitchens.
