Pavement ants in GTA homes

Pavement ants are the small brown or black ants that march indoors each spring across the Greater Toronto Area. The colony lives in soil under patios, driveways and foundation cracks. They are a nuisance in kitchens. They do not excavate house framing the way carpenter ants do.

How to recognize it

  • Trails of small brown or black ants along baseboards, counters and windowsills
  • A line of ants coming from a crack in the foundation, patio or sidewalk
  • Activity that peaks in spring and returns on the same path
  • Workers much smaller than the large black carpenter ants seen at night

What damage it causes

  • Food contaminated along the trail on counters and in pet dishes
  • No hollowing of decks, trim or framing. That pattern belongs to carpenter ants
  • Soil pushed up between patio slabs where the nest sits
  • A trail that returns after the ants you can see are wiped away, because the colony is still outside

Where it lives

  • Soil under concrete patios, driveways and sidewalks
  • Cracks where the foundation meets the slab, then along baseboards to the kitchen
  • Warm kitchens and pet-food bowls once a trail is established
  • Houses and townhouses across Brampton, Mississauga, Toronto and the rest of the GTA

Questions about pavement ants

Are the ants in my kitchen carpenter ants?

Usually not. The ants on a kitchen counter in spring are often pavement ants: small, and coming from a crack in the foundation. Carpenter ants are larger, often black, and more active at night, with sawdust near wood.

Where is the pavement ant nest?

Under the patio, driveway or sidewalk, or in the soil against the foundation. The ants indoors are workers. The colony stays outside until the trail is followed back.

Common in these cities

Often confused with carpenter ants.
