German cockroaches in GTA kitchens

German cockroaches are small, light-brown insects with two dark stripes behind the head. In Greater Toronto Area homes and condos they live in warm, humid kitchens: behind fridges, under sinks and inside appliance motors. They spoil food, leave a musty smell, and move between units through shared walls.

How to recognize it

  • Small, light-brown cockroach with two dark stripes on the shield behind the head
  • Pepper-like droppings in drawers, on cupboard hinges and along the back of the counter
  • Egg cases and shed skins behind the fridge or under the sink
  • Insects that scatter when a light is turned on at night

What damage it causes

  • Food, dishes and packaging contaminated where they crawl
  • A musty odour once a kitchen has a large population
  • Spread into neighbouring apartments and townhouses through shared plumbing and walls
  • They do not chew structural wood. The problem is the kitchen, not the frame of the house

Where it lives

  • Behind and under the fridge, stove and dishwasher, where motors stay warm
  • The void under the kitchen sink and around dishwasher plumbing
  • Cardboard, grocery bags and clutter that give them cover
  • Condos, apartments and attached homes in Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga and the rest of the GTA

Questions about german cockroaches

Why do cockroaches show up in a clean kitchen?

German cockroaches need warmth, water and a little food, not a dirty house. A drip under the sink or crumbs behind the fridge is enough, and in a condo they often arrive from the unit next door.

Do German cockroaches live outside in Ontario?

Not through a GTA winter. They depend on heated buildings. Seeing them indoors is a sign of an indoor population, not a pest that wandered in from the yard.
