Bed bugs in GTA homes

Bed bugs are flat, apple-seed-sized insects that feed on blood at night. In Greater Toronto Area homes and apartments they hide in mattress seams, bed frames, headboards and sofa creases, and they travel in luggage and used furniture. They do not damage the building. They leave bites, spots of blood and dark droppings on sheets.

How to recognize it

  • Flat, oval, reddish-brown insects about the size of an apple seed
  • Rusty spots or tiny dark droppings on sheets, mattress piping and the bed frame
  • Itchy bites in a line or cluster, often noticed in the morning
  • Shed skins and pale eggs in cracks close to where people sleep or sit

What damage it causes

  • Bites and lost sleep. They do not chew wood or wiring
  • Stained sheets, mattresses and upholstery from blood spots and droppings
  • Infested sofas and bed frames that are hard to salvage once numbers are high
  • Spread to a neighbouring unit in apartments and condos through walls and shared furniture

Where it lives

  • Mattress seams, box springs, headboards and the cracks of a bed frame
  • Sofa and chair creases in living rooms, not only bedrooms
  • Luggage, backpacks and used furniture brought into the home
  • Apartments, condos and houses across Toronto, Brampton and Mississauga

Questions about bed bugs

Do bed bugs only live in beds?

No. The bed is the usual hiding place because people sleep there, but they also live in sofa seams, bed frames and luggage. An inspection checks the rooms where people sit and sleep, not only the mattress.

Can I see bed bugs during the day?

They hide in cracks during the day and feed at night. What people usually find first is spots on the sheets, shed skins, or bites, not the insects walking in the open.
